What is ICON?

How does ICON work?
If caries begins to destroy tooth minerals, causing micro-damage, ICON helps stop the damage from getting worse.
This is a microinvasive procedure that fills and strengthens minor damage of tooth enamel that has occurred at an early stage of dental caries.
ICON acts as a cavity infiltrator that seals the enamel pores and prevents further development of cavities.
Stages of the ICON treatment procedure
Before using ICON treatment, it is important to note that this method is only suitable for treating incipient caries. ICON covers damage to the tooth surface that appears as discoloration, or in the early stages of caries, when the damage is no deeper than 1/3 of the dentin. If a so-called hole is already visible in the tooth, it can no longer be repaired with ICON treatment.
During the procedure, the affected area is cleaned and covered with ICON, which penetrates the damaged, porous tooth enamel, hardens and stops the further development of caries.
- Teeth cleaning – the procedure begins with a gentle cleaning of the teeth with a special paste that removes dental plaque and leaves teeth fresh and clean.
- Enamel preparation – a mild acid is then applied to the teeth, which opens the pores of the enamel so that the treatment solution can better penetrate the pores and work.
- Applying resin – Once the acid has done its job, a high-quality resin is applied to the teeth. This resin penetrates into the pores of the tooth enamel, effectively sealing them and providing additional protection against further degradation.
- Light curing – a special light curing technique is used to fix the resin and ensure a long-lasting result, effectively and permanently closing the pores of the enamel.
Treatment of congenital enamel defects with the ICON system
ICON treatment is also an excellent solution for patients with congenital enamel defects, improving the aesthetic appearance of teeth. Congenital enamel defects can be caused by genetic factors, such as amelogenesis imperfecta, as well as infections during pregnancy, nutritional deficiencies, or trauma.
These defects appear as white or brown spots on the teeth. ICON treatment allows you to repair damage without drilling, strengthening tooth enamel and improving the appearance of defects, making your smile even more beautiful.
Other treatment options
In addition to ICON treatment, there are other methods for treating tooth enamel defects:

- Dental laminates – suitable for protecting teeth and hiding defects in more severe cases.
Duration and outcome of ICON treatment
Studies show that the results of ICON treatment last for at least 6 years. Each case is individual and although complete stain removal cannot always be guaranteed, in most cases significant cosmetic improvement is achieved with just one painless appointment. In the worst case, the appearance has not changed, but nothing harmful has been done to the tooth.
